Coursebooks and lesson materials are an integral part of English teaching. The materials that can be used by teachers can be divided in authentic (magazines, newspapers, videos, films, songs) and created materials (word search puzzles, role-play cards, crosswords, gap fill activities, flashcards, picture stories). Course books have a lot of advantages: they provide a syllabus, they make student secure and comfortable, they save time and are easier to be used, they are attractive, they are tested before publication, they offer progression continuity. On the other hand, corse books are always liked by the students, they can be boring, they don't fit the needs of the class group, many are unattractive and they can dictate what to be taught. Teachers have to make the best use of course books so they can omit, replace, supplement or adapt them.
