This unit opened my eyes to the possibilities of engaging a classroom while following a lesson plan. The use of authentic materials seems to enhance the flexibility needed to keep students interested. While I still clearly see some advantages in using a coursebook with its tested components, there are many creative possibilities involved in using newspapers, menus, or other types of “real-life” material. As long as a teacher is aware that caution must be taken in selecting materials appropriate to the learners’ level, I can see how lessons could be more interesting and lively with creative use of authentic materials.
