It seems that this unit brings forth a basic tenet of the teaching and learning experience: that is that the communication requires efforts and input from both sides. It is a symbiotic relationship with rewards and work on both sides. Because we are human, we learn things in a vast context. An example of how this is applied to teachers would be their balance in many of their roles. They must be both leader and follower. Outlining activities, ideas and components is important, but must be balanced with the ability to sense, monitor and be flexible enough to offer the students some free reign to discover things. From the students' side? Their input is valuable and requires them to be a good leaner by exhibiting initiative once they are given some guidance and framework. Aside from paying attention to what is presented by the teacher, can you spot ways to apply your vocabulary or understanding on the playground, or at home, or while eating a meal? At the same time, a student must exercise some discipline and attention for the basics taught by the teacher. I think the success of this relationship could be defined as the teacher using a number of ideas, methods, structure, and knowledge to offer the student the opportunities to take in what is needed...and then express subject matter outwardly. The added components of this relationship greatly enhance the possibility of success. Those subtler aspects of respect, understanding, and patience are woven into the fabric of learning. If the student cannot view the teacher with respect and belief that the teacher wants the very best outcome for the student, then the teacher will not be able to establish the needed rapport. By the same token, the teacher must walk that balance between offering appropriate framework of control...while understanding that each student may have individual keys to discovering how to add language life-skills in a positive and effective way for success in their future.
