EVLAUTION BY THE STUDENTS a. Survey by students to evaluate the course b. Discuss results to promote interaction, greater awareness, 3. TESTS a. Placement tests – place into correct class according to language ability, starts with simple Qs and becomes progressively more difficult. Include a few general Qs to provide more information on fluency level. Spoken component would start with simple to more difficult Qs. b. Diagnostic tests – similar in content to Placement Tests, c. Progress tests – to gauge what language has been remembered, encourages students to review and revise. Covers all 4 skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening. d. Practice tests – similar in format and structure to the external examination e. Achievement tests f. External exam. Examples: • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), • IELTS (International English Language Testing System), • TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), • Cambridge Assessment; (BEC) Business English Certification; OCR, ESOL, UCLES, KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, BULATS. • ESOL skills for life from Trinity College London. Tasks 1. Why do teachers need to evaluate their students’ English? Teachers need to evaluate their students’ English because of the need to review the work done, to see how well the students performed the tasks and whether they had any problems. 2. What reasons might students have for studying for formal or external tests of English? Students may take external test of English a. To meet the entry requirements of higher education courses b. To be granted citizenship in certain countries. c. To obtain a promotion in companies that want employees to know other languages. d. To travel to English-speaking countries for work or holidays. 4. What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of the example placement test of this unit? Advantages: It covers only reading skill. Disadvantage: There is no indication of the other skills i.e. speaking, writing and listening. 5. What would you include in a thirty-minute test for a group of beginners, making sure that you were testing all four skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening)? Give a detailed outline of the test you would construct, with examples. • SPEAKING: The Speaking test is 5 minutes long and you will have to answer questions about yourself and your family. • READING: The reading test is 10 minutes. Read the text, then try to answer the questions. • WRITING: The writing test is 10 minutes on a chosen topic. • LISTENING: The listening test is 5 minutes Listen to the sound file and answer four questions.
