Unit 9 Coursebooks & Lesson Materials Authentic Materials are – from programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films. Elementary level can use TV guides. Higher levels can compare different TV guides with their native countries’. This material is REAL and are more interesting and motivating. Students gain confidence using them. And can be geared to the interests of a particular group. Created material are – Designed by the teacher and can be graded to the level of the students. Eg. Crosswords, Word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities and picture stories. Use of Course books Advantages: - Expected by the students - Easier and less time-consuming - Graded syllabus to a suitable level for the students - Provides security - A balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work - Offers continuity and progression - Tried and tested - Attractive and appealing to the eye - It continually practices previously introduced language items - Offers goods ideas for inexperienced teachers. Disadvantages: - May not fit the specific needs and interests of the class - Students may not like the book and reluctant to use it. - Becomes predictable and boring - Make teachers lazy and stop creativity. - Always a compromise. - Used by all and may not cover in depth topics specific to individual nationalities - Teachers rarely get to choose the course books and may be outdated - Dictates what is to be taught. Best use of Course books: - look for a range of books - Vary the material used - Think of what will motivate and what needs to be supplemented - Think of time needed for each task and create a balanced lesson. - Find ways to match the book to the needs of students. - Look for difficulties not highlighted in the book. - Look at what particular students need. - Try out other ideas and vary the activities. There are four different options for course book use: - Omit - Teachers may omit certain topics but omitting too much will not be beneficial. - Replace - Rather than omit, replace it with similar more appropriate material. - Supplement - Add extra material to the book to reinforce a language point. - Adapt – using the same material in their own ways and style. When analyzing a course book, need to consider - Price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topic, teacher’s guide, other materials like workbooks, audio, videos etc.
