This unit outlined two of the four basic skills in any language-- reading and listening. These two skills are also known as receptive skills because they are the two ways that we receive language. When thinking of language acquisition, all four skills are equally important and relevant, but it is important to understand that smartly planned and prepared lessons ensure that your students skills are improving. There are many different reasons and motives for people to read and listen in a language. These range from listening to the radio to deducing the meaning of individual words and phrases for meaning. When teaching speakers of other languages, it is important to understand that language is often based on cultural norms and experiences (such as the example of Bears the football team, not the animal) and be mindful to teach important vocabulary before the student is expected to produce complex ideas or statements independently.
