As a teacher, I believe that there is more to teaching students what they need to know in order to be successful in the course of study they are taking as far as the subject matter is concerned. Thus, the medium of instruction plays a key role in the success of the lesson and how the teacher utilize this in the classroom. A lot of misunderstandings could be avoided and the instructions made more coherent if ESL teachers have mastery of the effective speech production relating to the different aspects of the English language particularly in pronunciation and phonology.
Furthermore, teaching students these subject areas would need an ESL teacher a certain degree of mastery so as to guide the learners how to do it properly and to provide them with a natural English speaker model. However, it is not essential to convert everything into phonetic scripts as English is more about production and application of the language in communication and not on phonetic transcription.
In sum, the speech produced in English carries a certain meaning and knowing this and teaching the students the right way of producing the language as close to the native speakers as possible is important in the field of ESL teaching especially the right stress, intonation and pronunciation in relation to the rhythm and articulation.
