This unit covers the different past tenses used in the English language. There are many similarities between the past tense and present tense forms. Not only their naming scheme but also their structure and system are similar. The different forms of the past tense include: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Again, each of these tense forms have their own specific uses and are necessary components of the English language. While there are rules and common structures, there are still irregular forms and exceptions to the rules. It is important to teach students the basic forms for these tense forms but it is also very important that students and teachers alike understand that the irregularities can cause issues for learners. In order to be effective teachers, we must understand not only how to use the tense forms but also the common mistakes that can occur and how to correct them. In all of these tense forms, one of the main activities that can support student learning is story telling - which combines various tense forms of the English language and can promote the use of present and past tense forms. As with all grammar points, this can pose a major block for students learning English, but it is crucial that the students learn these basic language points in order to use the language properly.
