This unit covers mainly the skill of classroom management- which involves not only the teacher's choice of management methods, but also how to physically manage a classroom and its shortcomings. While it is important to learn different classroom management methods, it is also important to factor in the various different factors that can affect the classroom and students as a whole. A teacher must be able to effectively use eye contact, gestures and their voice to lead and guide the class. While these are all stemming from the teacher, other factors such as the physical classroom itself can affect how the teacher utilizes each of these things. Furthermore, another key skill that teachers much master is how to appropriately organize how work will be completed in class. Each activity has its own needs and so certain activities will lend themselves better to whole class group work, or pair work, or individual work. It is up to the teacher to determine which of these methods suits the activity best and how each can impact their students' learning. Building on how to set up groups for work is classroom arrangement. In order to effectively teach, a teacher needs to set up the physical learning space to accommodate their students and their lessons. The teacher's position must also adjust depending on what type of lesson is planned and what activities are planned. While it is most opportune for the teacher to be front and centre during lecture or presentations, this is not the case for other classroom activities. Lastly, the concept of classroom discipline and behaviour management is covered. While it is important to provide students with individual attention, it is not always reasonable to provide every student with 100% of your attention. So rather than investing all of the time on the weakest students or the strongest students, the teacher should aim to provide each student with equal amounts of attention and opportunity to grow their language abilities. This goes hand in hand with classroom discipline. It is important for the teacher to remain in control of the classroom using proper discipline methods, but it is also important to remember to not let this take over the main purpose of the class. overall, there are many factors that go into play with classroom management. While it seems overwhelming at first to manage a whole classroom a good teacher will gain the skill set required to manage every classroom. It takes time and practice, and it doesn't hurt to ask for help from colleagues.
