In this lesson I learned the key factors / components to apply when managing classes. We looked at how a teacher should first arrange the classroom so that it best suits his/her teaching tactics as well as more importantly the students ability to pay attention, capture the information, contribute to discussions, and maintain interest in lessons. Secondly we learned about the pros and cons of different mannerisms of teachers when communicating with students, things such as the proper type of eye contact, gestures, voice presentation. Then we looked at the proper type of grouping of students or classroom arrangements with regard to different lesson plans. We looked at benefits of students working as a classroom, individually, in pairs, or in small groups and when is a teacher able to use each method based on the type of lesson plan at hand. We looked at things such as when should a teacher write his/her lesson on the board, how much time should he spend on the board, the balance of classroom involvement and board work, different methods of reducing the amount of time spent with the back to the class, reducing teacher talk time and increasing student talk time, giving proper type of instructions and knowing how to ask whether students understand what they need to do in the specified activity. For example you should never simply ask the student if he/she understood. You should rather have them give you an explanation or example of what they understood instead which would be much more beneficial to their learning as well. It's also important to know what type of language to use for students when explaining task instructions, simplify it for them so it's clear, don't be overly repetitive as well because we don't want to bore them either. Lastly it was explained that establishing the proper "Rapport" between teacher and students plays a major role in determining if a class is enjoyable and there is successful learning from each and every student.
