This unit revealed to me that while I fully understood and had control of the English language, I did so without truly understanding the complexities and technical terms applied to it. What comes naturally to me as a native speaker is incredibly complex to a learner, and that had never been put into perspective for me. Taking the time to better dissect and understand the English language was humbling and intriguing. While I had a loose grasp of pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns, I learned that my understanding of them didn't completely encompass the entirety of what they were. For example, I only imagined adverbs as words that ended in 'ly' and simply described how something was done, when in reality it encompassed a greater variety of words to describe place, time, degree, and frequency. I realize that I struggle with the more nuanced parts of the English language, and this unit has both humbled me and inspired me to further my studies of grammar and English as a whole.
