A modal verb is a kind of auxiliary verb because its purpose is to help the main verb. You can't just use a modal verb by itself because it doesn't have a great deal of meaning on its own. Modal verbs don't change like other verbs do either. so you don't add 's' at the end when you say he/she/it in the present simple tense, you can't add 'ed' in the past simple tense and there's no gerund of the verb with 'ing' at the end either. Phrasal verbs are quite informal expressions that include a verb and least one preposition. The meaning isn't always obvious, which is one reason students struggle with them. The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence. My car has been stolen! The passive voice is often used in formal texts. Switching to the active voice will make your writing clearer and easier to read. For example; A great deal of meaning is conveyed by a few well-chosen words.
