there are 3 different ways to evaluating students' levels and progress: tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. in Tests there are placement tests(place the level of students), progress tests(used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten), diagnostic test(give at the start of the course), practice tests(prepare for external examination) and general external examinations(TOEFL, IELTS etc).
