Unit 5 focuses on teaching techniques that incorporate songs, games, stories, arts and crafts, and other activities. These strategies are critical to teaching young learners because they often address multiple intelligences simultaneously, thereby improving learning, and they are fun! Students learn best when they are having fun! I really enjoyed this unit. I regularly use songs and chants in my own classroom. In fact, I have found that if a student has difficulty pronouncing a word or phrase, I can turn it into a song. Once the student repeats the word or phrase as a song, they usually pronounce it correctly! I usually make up my own songs, as my students are Chinese pre-schoolers and many of them are unfamiliar with English nursery rhymes (some are familiar with them, but most are not). The other teaching techniques are still applicable to my own teaching, even though my employer already has prepared lesson plans and materials. Eventually I will teach in a real classroom environment, rather than the online environment I currently teach in. So I will be able to use these techniques covered in this Unit.
