The productive skills of speaking and writing are used to communicate. If student's don't understand why communication about something is important they will be less likely to engage and participate in the activity. Writing is more difficult to teach and because it is individual and needs quiet it is not taught as often. Speaking skills are easier to teach and correct quickly. The more an activity is controlled by the teacher, the focus is on accuracy; the more flexible the outcome, the focus is likely to be on fluency.
