Unit 13: Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology discussed how pronunciation is one of the most ignored aspect of learning English, and perhaps one of the more important aspects. It outlined intonation and stress, two ways that we emphasize parts of a word or sentence, to show emotion or tone; they can even offer information on how the speaker wants their sentence to be answered. It went one step further to provide examples of how English speakers say words versus how they are spelt (ex. butter vs. budder). Another part of the unit was on phonetics and the phonemic alphabet. It is a universal system for assigning symbols for each sound of a word; this is useful for words in the English language that should sound the same but don’t (ex. cough vs. dough). The last aspect of this unit was articulation. It described the different parts of the mouth and the sounds made from each. This was a difficult unit for me, as I imagine it is for many English-speakers. The introduction of the phonemic chart with like learning a new language for me, and I found myself having to translate into ‘English’.
