Unit 11: Teaching Receptive Skills discussed the four basic skills of any language, and classified them into two categories, receptive (reading and listening) and productive (speaking and writing). It went on to describe the reasons for receptive skills, which arose later in the unit, when designing the lesson structure (ie. keeping the students’ interest to help achieve the goal of learning the language). The unit divided reading further, into five specialistic skills, ways in which someone may read text. These skills are useful to identify for the purpose of understanding how information may be absorbed, thereby allowing us to choose what style of text to provide. As with many of the other units, problem areas where identified, and how to avoid them. The last part of this unit was providing an example of a lesson plan for receptive skill teaching. The most useful aspects of this unit were how text should be selected based on the student learning level, and the concept of pre-teaching vocabulary.
