The content of this unit has given me a clearer understanding of the needs that specific groups of students will have and how to better assess and meet those needs. For example, the needs of a regular adult class will differentiate from that of a business english class. Although the purpose of both is to learn English the focus will be different as one class’s lesson plans will cover daily activities while the other class’s lessons will be geared on how to conducts business in a foreign language. It was also comforting to know that, as a new English teacher, I do not need to have a business background or any other background to be able to teach specific groups. Nevertheless, as a teacher, I need be able to become acquainted with my students’ backgrounds (needs, interests, purpose for taking the course) to plan my lessons accordingly.
