As native language learners, we have the tendency to ignore or give little thought to the building blocks that make our language what it is. This unit was focused on one of the most important building blocks of language-phonetics. Phonetics encompasses stress, rhythm and the intonation of a language. We tend not to pay much attention to sound because when we have become accustomed to hearing a language being spoken most of our lives, we rarely notice the intricate and subtle sounds that come together to form a word or even how stress and intonation can give meaning to a sentence. On the contrary, the ear of some someone who is not familiar with a language might be more keen to recognizing these details simply because, to them, it is a completely new sound. It might even sound “funny”or “weird” unless their native language shares similar sounds with the foreign language. Nonetheless, their ability to make these observations can be an asset when the students are learning the most basic components of a new tongue. I myself, before reading this unit and before I was able to appreciate what phonetic symbols represented, assumed that the most basic form of a language was the alphabet, and learning it an essential part of the acquisition of a language, however, I now know that sound is the most primitive form of language. This means that learning a language is so much more than learning how to recognize letters and organizing them in a new way, it is more than memorizing new vocabulary and grammatical rules and structures, language is a way of expressing emotion and thought through sound.
