This unit covers modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. Modals can be used in a variety of ways: Obligation Possibility/Probability Permission/Prohibition Ability Advice Teaching the students which one to use in which situation is one of the challenges for teachers. It is a good idea to review many of the possible combinations. Past, present, and future uses sometimes have subtle differences. Passive voice is easier taught if the student can understand how the sentence is put together--whether a word is a subject or an object, or what used to be an object but now is being used as the subject. Relative clauses--a very difficult idea for the students to grasp. Using phrasal verbs can be a fun thing to teach because they are used so much on TV and in movies. Students may enjoy learning them, but the proper use can be difficult to remember.
