For an EFL teacher and student, the tense system can be a bit of a hard concept to grasp. Of course, like any language, native speakers of English don't have to think about which auxiliary verb to use and which form to use for a specific situation, it just comes naturally. Therefore teaching this can be quite difficult because we just know what sounds natural and what doesn't. As teachers of English, we teach our students that in English there are three times. Past, present and future. And within these times, there are four forms, simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. Therefore, 12 in total. Twelve forms can be a daunting thought for learners and therefore introducing them at a steady pace and allowing a lot of practice time is essential.
