Unit 11 focuses on receptive skills--the first essential half of learning a new language. There can be no fluency if you don't understand or comprehend what you're reading or hearing. Learning vocabulary is not enough to survive in a real-world environment, words are hollow if you don't know why you're using them. But its not so simple (Reading and Listening), because there are specializations that each share. Predictive texts help in understanding what you are about to hear or read, Specific Scanning helps us skip to the information we need rather than trudging through pages of text, General Skimming aids in understanding the gist of a situation or text, Detailed Information assists in thoroughly learning what you need to know, and Deducing the meaning can let a person survive in the outside world without being clueless. There are so many necessary functions of reading and listening, and I can only imagine how many purposes speaking and writing will have. There will be difficulties in teaching the skills in question--such as word length, sentence length, and number of unfamiliar words, but there are ways to avoid these problematic scenarios; such as pre-teaching problematic words or choosing appropriate texts. It will be challenging work, but seems as though it can be a fun and creative lesson plan.
