Speaking and Writing have the most important roles in communication. Though understanding what you are hearing is vitally important, a language won't get you far if you aren't able to speak. What I feel is most helpful to realize and utilize is the desire and need of students. Communication can get a student far, especially when it is used to complete a task. Receptive skills seemed to have focused on two broad elements: Purpose, and entertainment. Whereas productive skills are for communicating purpose, saying something, listening to something, or out of interest. I think these skills have opportunity to be more fun. There are a lot of games that could be played, and more room to be fluent. Reading and listening bears no room for creativity. To be able to say what you feel, or write what you see, are so deeply personal and easier to create interest in. As long as a strong desire is found, I think this is the most engaging of lessons. I've also become more aware of the reason students might not answer or respond to questions or activities--doubt, fear, cultural conflict, lack of interest, peer judgments, or prior learning are all roadblocks to prevent a successful lesson. Learning ways around it--group work, pair work, thorough preparation, interesting topics--is exactly what a new teacher will need. Creating and comfortable, safe environment is essential if I want to get anywhere.
