Thankfully, this unit whilst complicated, does come more naturally as compared to previous grammar units but some of the alternatives are definitely common errors that even native speakers are prone to make on a regular basis. The continuum of time versus the reported nature of speech will make the transfer of intended tense at time of speaking always difficult to convey. I think some of the examples in this unit were likely used to prove the subtlety of the differences but I still agree studying reported speech is an essential part of learning English.
