Unit 20 gives a final overview of the most common problem situations that teachers might encounter in the classroom and suggests several ways to deal with those situations. Sooner or later, every teacher will encounter some of the following issues: First lessons: the most important thing is to establish rapport between the teacher and the class, and among the students in the case of a new group. Warmers: short, fun, communicative activities should be used to get students motivated and using English. Different levels: experienced teachers will adopt a mix of techniques to enable classes to progress smoothly, in spite of inevitable gaps between students’ levels. Large classes: student participation is seriously hindered within big groups, so the teacher must employ a number of strategies to create successful large classes. Use of native language: the teacher should sympathise and understand why a student felt the need to communicate in their native language while, at the same time, encourage students to practice and improve their English language skills. Reluctant students: for several different reasons, some students will resist talking and participating in class. The teacher must be familiar with several ways to encourage those students overcome their reluctance and improve their productive skills. Difficulties with listening texts: Just like with productive skills, teachers should be familiar with techniques to help students improve their listening skills.
