Authentic materials are incredibly important to shaping a student's understanding of the English language, but the materials must be introduced at the right times with a thorough explanation. In American schools, the newspaper is referenced by teachers to share real world usage of the English language. But beginner students will not be able to read and understand the content of newspapers. For my class, I would use the newspaper but focus on the first sentence of an article to explain grammar. Newspapers share what the rest of the article will be about in the first sentence. Students will have to rely on their predictive skills, but over time, they will be able to read more of future articles to hone their understanding of English outside of the classroom as well.
