Unit Three of the course is designed to provide the prospective language teacher with an overview of the basic theories of language acquisition, as well as many examples of classroom activities and how to incorporate them into a lesson effectively. The basic lesson structure discussed is the ESA method, which stands for 'Engage, Study, Activate.' While these stages may be repeated and re-ordered as illustrated with the boomerang and patchwork sequences, the important thing is that the teacher begins by engaging the students interest, provides an opportunity for study and appropriate correction of the lesson's major concepts, and eventually ends by allowing the student's to activate their knowledge of the language through creative use. It is important that the teacher keep his or her talk time to a minimum, and facilitate the students' discovery of the language on their own. The teacher must also know when and how to effectively correct student errors without damaging the students' confidence or enthusiasm for the language, which includes keeping corrections of mere mistakes to a minimum.
