Teaching productive skills is fundamental to the learning of a language. Productive skills are the ability to speak and write and they both share the same basic goal: communicating with others. Throughout the learning process, teachers will need to focus on either the accuracy or the fluency of the language. Accuracy being the correct usage of the language (grammar, pronunciation, etc) and fluency being the ability to experiment and be creative with the language, having a constant flow of communication. Both accuracy and fluency are equally important. The activities used to improve the speaking abilities will be divided between: Controlled activities where the language is controlled by the teacher and they are more accuracy based; Guided activities that continue to have the language controlled by the teacher and are still accuracy based but there is a bit more freedom on the creativity and production of the language; and finally the Creative communication activities which would be completely fluency based, where the teacher gives a scenario to work on but the content and language are produced completely by the students. All these activities should encourage interaction and participation, making students feel comfortable with and interested on the topic. While teaching writing skills the teacher will need to focus not only on the correct usage of the language but also on the penmanship in cases where the native language of students uses a different alphabet, or to simply make sure the writing is legible; it will also be very important to pay attention to correct grammar and spelling rules, as well as the layout and punctuation used. An important part of the writing process is to encourage creative writing since it may help on the production of more engaged work.
