I feel that one's understanding of modals can greatly affect effective communication. So much emotion can be communicated by the intonation of one's speech. But the type of modal verb communicates need, which can be subjective to each person. For example, after being brought up being taught that 'should' implies moral obligation and being encouraged to use it sparingly, I often balk when someone says to me 'You should...' However, understanding that someone may be intending to give friendly advice gives it a different feel.
