Future tenses can be broken down into seven common tenses. Four of the tenses, Future Simple; Future Continuous; Future Perfect; and Future Perfect Continuous are familiar tenses that have similar counterparts in both past and present. The “going to” tense stands out of the bunch as its structure is built around the phrase “going to” and is so like the present continuous. The final two tenses are modifications of present tenses. Both follow the same form as they do in the present but are used to discuss present actions in the future. When teaching students, it will be a good idea to bring up the past and present tenses again and make sure they can notice the differences. Strong Active learning will be key to solidify the differences to the students too.
