Unit 19 focuses on teaching special groups. Beginner students can be grouped into categories of the absolute beginner, the false beginner, the adult beginner, the young beginner, and the beginner without Roman alphabet. Methodology and techniques for teaching beginners include: have clear and realistic aims, be as visual as possible and strategic with your board work and control your language to not confuse or overwhelm, use choral repetition, use pair and group work, and encourage students to speak English as much as possible. Possible problems for teaching beginners include: what to do with a mix of real and false beginners, how to help weaker students (pair with stronger students), going too quickly (don’t be afraid to adjust pace), replay audios if the students cannot understand it. To encourage motivation for beginners do not over-correct, do not rely on the book too much, create a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, praise and encourage, and focus on what is easy. Suggestions for teaching individual students include completing a needs analysis and finding out the student’s specific language problems, do not rely only on free conversation but mix it up with guided conversation, use vocabulary building based on a theme, and focus on grammatical training. When teaching children remember that discipline issues in the classroom can be greatly reduced by the attitude of the teacher toward the students. When teaching Business English/ English for Specific Purposes (ESP)you need to have a general understanding of the client’s job so that you know which areas of English will be most helpful to them. A needs analysis should include precisely what they use English for in their jobs now and in the future.
