Unit 16 first covers the five types of conditional phrases and how to effectively teach them. Conditional phrases or simply put, phrases that follow a 'if ___, then ___' format, are distinguished by the tense of the verb corresponding to the time frame in which the condition might be (or might have been) fulfilled, and thus also the appropriate tense for the verb of consequence. This unit also addressed the difference between direct speech (i.e., 'I like languages') and reported speech (i.e., 'I wrote that I like languages'). This last point of grammar is one that most native English speakers are rarely confronted with in the classroom, and thus a source of unconscious grammatical error. The verb tense used in direct speech most often must be changed when reporting that speech. Additionally, words denoting time (i.e., 'tomorrow,' 'the next day,' that evening') are also potentially a source of difficulty for students when dealing with reported speech.
