As a teacher I usually deal with two types of tests: placement or diagnostic tests and progress tests. At the start of a new course or a new school year we need to form different groups, that's why we need to identify the level of English of our future students. With the students who study on the ongoing basis we use diagnostic tests to see what they already know and to plan our future lessons. Progress tests are obligatory during the school year to check what the students have already learned, to see if some language points need more practice or some revision.
