This unit is as interesting and useful as the others. The unit looks closely at the importance of modal verbs in English communication and also covers phrasal verbs, the passive voice and relative clauses.A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation. The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence. Relative clauses. Relative clauses are clauses starting with the relative pronouns who, that, which, whose, where, when. They are most often used to define or identify the noun that precedes them. Phrasal verbs. A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition, or both. There are three basic types of phrasal verbs:intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.Typically, their meaning is not obvious from the meanings of the individual words themselves. That's why it is one of the most complicated aspects in English grammar
