Unit 14 discusses the use of course books and other lesson materials. Advantages of using authentic materials include that they are real and therefore more interesting and motivating, students can gain confidence when they understand them, and they can be geared to the interests of a particular group of students. Created materials can be graded to the level of the students and include crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, and picture stories. Types of course books include student’s book, workbook, audio/video resources, teacher’s book, graded readers. Advantages of course books include that students are accustomed to using them, it provides a framework and syllabus graded to a level suitable for the students, provides a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary, and skills work, and they are tried and tested. Disadvantages of using course books include that it doesn’t always meet the needs and interests of all class members, students may not like the format of the book, can become boring and make teachers lazy, may not be tailored well to the nationality(ies) you are teaching to, may be outdated, and can dictate too much what is being taught. Best use of course books include finding one that is most suitable for your class, not using it for the whole lesson and replacing some activities to vary activities and tailor to your students’ needs, and creating a balanced lesson. Teachers can customize their use of the course book by omitting certain lessons, replacing unsuitable materials, supplementing extra materials and adapting use of the materials to the teacher’s style.
