Diagnostic tests are incredibly helpful when assessing the actual levels of students after they have been placed in a level. This gives the teacher an early indicator of what kinds of materials specific students will need to succeed. Some students may be better at writing and speaking than reading and writing, which will require them to practice outside of class those types of skills. Also, progress tests help to redesign the teacher's approach to specific students that may have showed early success but are struggling with harder concepts during the semester. Progress tests prove that diagnostic tests are not very good predictors of a student's success in learning a new language.
