English intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence, whereas stress is more focused on individual words. There are no intonation and stress in my native language, Korean. Thus these are tricky sometimes. In Korean we have a rising tone which is very common and simple when we make a question. In regard of intonation, that is all Korean has. Through this unit, I learned three patterns of intonation which are rising/fall, flat, final rising tone. Rising/ Falling tone indicates that speakers have finished what they want to say. Rising tone indicates that speakers want to hear from listeners. Flat intonation means not interesting or welcoming. While intonation changes a lot, stress also changes but it is predictable. Learners can learn stress using a dictionary. While learning stress in a word is easy, it is hard to find the stressed words in the sentence. It is up to what the speaker wants to emphasize.
