Unit ten consisted to juxtaposed ineffective and effective teaching through two videos of the same teacher teaching the same lesson to the same group of students, but in two radically different manners. In the first video, the teacher did a terrible job of not only instruction, but of interacting with students. He failed to implement the ESA model, and he persisted throughout the lesson with a negative attitude and a very unclear and confusing manner of communication. The students were understandably unable and unwilling to participate, given the expressly poor quality of the instruction. In the second video, the teacher's manner and instruction dramatically improved. He established rapport with the students right away, and continued to interact with them in a friendly and enthusiastic manner, which resulted in a high level of student participation. He effectively engaged the students' interest, communicated the main grammatical point of the lesson (modal auxiliary verbs), and activated the students' understanding of the lesson's subject as well as preexisting knowledge of the language.
