In the previous lessons, I have learnt about grammar, pronunciation, teaching methods and so on. But in the actual teaching process, we’ll meet some kinds of questions. In Unit 20, common problem situations are introduced. When we have the first lesson, it’s better to establish rapport between the students and also between teachers and students, rather than resort to course books. We can do some activities like questionnaire/survey, pass the ball game and needs analysis. There’re some typical warmer activities such as hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters and memory games, which are designed to get students motivated and using English. However, the students may be different levels. In order to solve this problem, we could use different materials, or use the same material but set different tasks, or pair stronger students with weaker ones. Another question is that it’s hard to involve all pupils equally to classroom control for large classes. We can employ techniques such as use worksheets, pair/group work, clarity, choral repetition, appoint group leaders and dynamics. Some students may be reluctant to use English. We have learnt many ways, such as use plenty of pair work, controlled practice, role-play and a tape recorder, to encourage them to speak. There’s also a common problem that it’s difficult for students to listen texts. We should work with the students to help them improve their listening other than avoid using cassettes. We should also encourage the students to speak in English other than their native language. We should be patient to students, enlighten them and help them build self-confidence.
