It is really difficult to comment on this particular unit, because I don’t feel that it has brought anything essentially new to the table. Most of its main ideas were already mentioned in previous units. However it will be quite intersting to dig into more detailed understanding and usage of language function. There is formal and informal language that should be described to students, implying different approaches and vocabularies. Students should be reminded that certain language must be avoided in the formal conversation, while in a friendly, tongue-in-cheek dialogue rules are completely different. In any way students should be exposed to the correct and eloquent display of English language, that would inspire them to improve their own level of language. Aside from in-class activities, the teacher may also set a pattern for students to continue learning some new words even away from school. Students should be encouraged to enrich their vocabulary while at home, doing daily routines like eating breakfast, watching tv or listening to music. Come to think of it, this might be a new hidden phase of ESA structure, when students will explore the world of English language on their own, so they can later discuss their findings with the teacher during Engage phase of a lesson.
