This unit deals with the materials teachers use in the classroom. The lists of things used may include: the board (teachers have to be careful and plan ahead a little), audio or video (like cassettes or DVDs; we have to make sure it works well and that the sound is good), worksheets and of course: coursebooks. The material can be authentic (like newspapers, songs...) or created (games, word-search...). Authentic material can be a little more complex for the students and may not be very specific the need of the lesson, but it can be very motivating and interesting for the students. Created materiel is designed for a specific purpose in the lesson and is appropriate for the level of the students, but it takes longer to make and may fell more 'artificial' for the students. So a balance of the two types of material is needed. When choosing the coursebook (if possible) the teacher has to take into account the price, the knowledge taught and the way it is brought. It also has to be appropriate for the students and somewhat appealing. During the lessons, the teacher has to make sure not to use the coursebook to much, and have different activities/work for the students to keep everything interesting and balanced. Coursebooks have a gradual learning curve but they may not be specific to what we want the students to learn. Teachers can omit, replace, adapt or supplement the coursebook when needed.
