This unit confronts issues that are very common and will come up often when teaching English as a second language. It is important to plan ahead for any trouble that a teacher may face as this will allow for an overall smoother lesson. In the first lesson, the teacher must put themselves in the students' shoes. An environment needs to be established in order to build rapport between student and teacher. A small activity is great for breaking the ice and getting the student thinking and speaking in English. Activities such as questionnaires, games and a needs analysis allow the teacher to learn more about the student and allows the student to become more comfortable with the teacher. In following the lessons, the teacher should start with a short activity to set the mood for the day. No student wants to walk into the class and start right away on the coursebook. It always helps to have a game ready that ties into what will be covered. Oftentimes, a classroom is filled with students at all different language levels. A teacher can have the weaker students pair up with stronger students or simply provide the same material, but different tasks according to level. With larger classes, it always helps to appoint team leaders and facilitate group or pair work to allow even reluctant students an opportunity to participate. The use of the native language is very common in an English learning classroom, since the student often finds it easier to express oneself. It is important that the teacher exchange only in English even if he or she understands the native language. English speaking must be encouraged at all times. As long as the teacher is able to establish a comfortable atmosphere and maintain a firm but fair attitude throughout the course, the students will undoubtedly improve in their language speaking abilities.
