Speaking and writing is just as important as a language's receptive skills, listening and reading. In order to produce language, lesson plans must focus on both accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is meant to concentrate on the correct use of the language whereas fluency allows for creativity and a smooth flow of communication. Accuracy takes place in the study phase while fluency takes place in the activate state of an ESA lesson. Controlled activities take place when language use is controlled by the teaching and usually involves drilling which practices pronunciation of a word. Guided activities are more creative and allow for more student input and usually involve model dialogues. Creative communication is where fluency is most used and involves the most student input. Activities in this part of a lesson usually include discussions, debates or simulations. Speaking a different language is already a nerve-wracking thing, but with student interaction and a comfortable atmosphere, the student will feel more confident in his or her speaking abilities. It is important for the teacher to keep this in mind when creating lesson plans so as to include activities that will allow a student enough spoken practice. It is important that a teacher anticipates issues that will occur in order to have a solution ready to overcome difficulties. In a student's written skills, handwriting, spelling and punctuation are key. Creative lessons should also be encouraged to build a student's confidence and build a sense of pride in their work. Games in a classroom always help in improving speaking and writing skills as they are informative and fun allowing for an easier way to remember what was learned.
