This last unit explains some of the common problematic situations a teacher could face, and offers some advice. One that every teacher will face is the first lesson. It can be new groups, where the students don’t know each other or existing groups, where they’re likely to be familiar with each other. The teacher has to try to find out the students’ level, interests and needs. Questionnaires type games can be very useful to achieve it. The beginning of the lessons can be difficult for everyone, so warmers (short and fun games) are used to make the students a little more comfortable and motivated to use and learn English. Differences in level within the same classroom can create difficulties (maybe boredom for the more advanced students). So we can adapt the material according to different levels, we can pair weaker students with stronger ones, or we don’t do anything (but we have to be careful with this option). Large classes may cause trouble, but different activities (pair or group work, worksheets and choral repetitions) along with clarity can make it more enjoyable for everyone. For reluctant students, we can use pair work and controlled practice to try to make them fell more comfortable and motivated to speak English. To try to limit the use of the native language of the students, the activities need to be appropriate for their level and with clear explanations. The teacher also needs to talk only in English, and encourage the students as much as possible.
