As a current middle school English teacher, I found this unit to be an adequate refresher of my duties as an educator and the responsibilities of my students as learners. I am constantly trying to develop and build relationships with students so that they can lower their affective filters, which will enable them to comprehend, retain, and make sense of the information in the lessons. I am often finding myself playing different roles in the classroom—often the facilitator, organizer, modeler, and prompter—as these are the roles in which my students respond best to. Since I only teach middle school, I’ve never really thought about how it would be to teach adults who are English Learners. I thought the facts that they would bring their own education experience into the classroom and that they would try to draw comparison between the new language and their native language were very interesting and accurate points. One thing I found to be interesting was the Common European Framework for categorizing English Learners. The only framework I’ve seen for English Learners is the California ELD Standards, which I am required to follow in my classroom. These standards label students on three levels (Emerging, Expanding, Bridging) so it’s rewarding to have another perspective from a different country to understand how English Learners are classified in other parts of the world.
