This unit explains the different groups of student a teacher could have, and gives some advice on how to teach those groups. We have the beginners; how can be adults or children, and absolute (no exposure to the language at all) or false beginners (with a little knowledge of the L2). For beginners, teachers have to be simple and clear, visual, praising (when possible), patient, responding to individual needs and make the students talk as much as possible (maybe through pair work). Some beginners may not have been exposed much to the roman alphabet, so we’ll have to teach it to them. We can also teach individuals (one-one-one classes). Here, instead of groups, we can focus and the students needs, interests and difficulties, we are able to go on their speed. But teachers have to be careful to teach them everything (some students don’t want to train a particular skill) and keep it fresh and interesting. A needs analysis may be a good start. Young learners tend to be enthusiastic but may have a short attention span. We need to praise them when possible, reference individuals, use repetitions (like songs, drills...) have a lot of different activities, be slow and keep it simple. Business English can be for individuals, a group coming to a language school or the teacher going to their company. Here, the clients (students) tend to be more tired, not everyone will have the same level, motivation may be lacking and the attendance may not be perfect. We have to keep all of this in mind (be ready to not do everything that was planned, maybe less homework, material and exercises that corresponds to the company), and remember to teach them English (not how to do their work). A level test and a needs analysis are important, to then discuss with the group the needs and approach of the lessons. Finlay, there’s a difference in monolingual and multilingual classes. Monolingual classes are a group of students who have a similar culture (most of them coming from the same country) and may have similar difficulties. For example, a class of japanese kids in Tokyo. Multilingual groups are formed of international students, having different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. They tend to have a lot of exposure to English (outside of the class room), but their difficulties may vary a lot. For example, an international school in London.
