This unit dissected receptive skills, so a teacher could understand how to facilitate a lesson that incorporates better reading and listening comprehension. When we read or listen, we are either doing so for a purpose or for entertainment. When listening to a language audio CD, we are learning and therefore doing so to achieve a specific goal. Whereas, reading a novel or listening to a podcast are usually for entertainment purposes. Sometimes something can be for both. A podcast can be both entertaining, but also extremely informative. An individual develops a number of specialized skills over time when reading and listening. Predictive skills are used to predict content based on a headline or introduction to an article. The human brain will also scan literature to find specific information and skim an article to get the general idea. When we are looking to acquire detailed information, we often read more intently and pay closer attention to everything. We are also able to understand content of an article by using context. This is essentially reading or hearing beyond what is written or said. When teaching a language it is important to hone in on a student's receptive skills. In order to do this a teacher should choose material that interests or motivates the students. A teacher should also work to build interest before reading or listening. It is important to pre-teach any complex material that may assist in the upcoming lesson, but it never helps to overdo it. There should also be a variety of material used to practice different skills. It also helps to incorporate tasks that aid understanding and are of realistic comprehension. Activate phases that are naturally pulled from the text also help with the flow of the lesson. This is why it is so important for a teacher to connect with the students. The more the teacher knows about the dynamic of the classroom, the easier it will be to introduce activities the will spark interest.
