Unit 15: Evaluation and testing explains why testing is important and necessary, and the different types of testing.
Evaluating our students is important to keep track of their progress. By testing them regularly, teachers can see if they understood and learned the material and see what they didn’t get or forgot from previous material. It also allows for the teacher to see if he or she explained the material well (if most students fail a particular exercise, the teacher probably didn’t explain it well and should redo that part of the lesson).
Teachers can have, instead of more formal tests, tutorials or student evaluations. Tutorials allow the teacher to explain to the students how he or she fells about their progress. Student evaluations let the students say how they felt about the course and the lessons.
More formal tests include a placement test(a progressive test, evaluating the four language skills, helping the teacher to place new student and make same leveled groups) or a diagnostic test (helping the teacher to see what material the students already know and what should be done during the course). We also have progressive tests, where we evaluate our students on the material that we taught them (it can be smaller and more regular, or a big, end of the semester test). Finally, we can also prepare students for external tests like the TOEIC, TOEFL, Cambridge Assessment, etc. with practice tests.
