In this unit conditionals and reported speech is explained and methods to teach them. Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an ‘if clause and a main clause – that are closely related. Conditional sentences are often divided into different types. Zero conditional = if/when + present tense. first conditional = if + present simple, will second conditional = if + past simple, would/could + base form. third conditional = if + past perfect, would/ could + have + past participle . mixed conditional = if + past perfect, would + base form. teaching methods for conditionals are :- split sentences, complete the sentences, chain conditionals, role plays for a specific situation, discussion about moral dilemmas ,what would happen if ? all these methods help students to understand the conditionals and their correct usage. Reported speech:- When we report someone’s words we can do it in two ways. We can use direct speech with quotation marks (“I work in a bank”), or we can use reported speech (He said he worked in a bank.)In reported speech the tenses, word-order and pronouns may be different from those in the original sentence.rules of reported speech, the change of verb tense the change of pronoun the change of time and place words. teaching methods= reporting verbs, intermediaries, media interviews.
