In this unit we covered teaching new language or, specifically, how to teach new vocabulary, grammar, and functions. Particular attention was given to how to choose new vocabulary to teach. Then the unit covered the kinds of information students need about both new grammar and new vocabulary words. What was new to me was the discussion of language functions (e.g. inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting, etc...). I had never thought of structuring a lesson around function and really like the idea. I think it may also be helpful to students to reframe their language acquisition in terms of functions. I'm excited about the new possibilities this opens up!
